Freemium

A pricing model with a permanently free tier alongside paid tiers that unlock capacity, features or support.

In depth

Freemium works when the free tier is genuinely useful, viral, and creates an obvious upgrade trigger (usage cap, collaboration, admin controls). Slack, Notion, Figma, Linear are canonical. Freemium fails when the free tier cannibalises paid or when conversion is <3% at maturity.
